SAD ACCIDENT.
A sad accident occurred about three miles north of Spirit Lake, Dickinson county, on the 22d ult. resulting in the death of J. L. Thomas, a young man aged 21 years, and at the time of his death a member of Capt. Ingham's company of State troops. The particulars as near as we can glean, are as follows:
The deceased and his brother, both members of the company, were out scouting when about three miles from camp they dismounted to shoot some game--the deceased had discharged his gun and finished reloading, when in the act of raising the gun from the ground the hammer caught in the grass causing the gun to explode, the charge striking him in the neck severing the wind-pipe and producing almost instant death. His brother who was but a short distance from him when he fell, ran to his assistance, but before he could reach him he had ceased to breathe. The parents of the deceased reside at Spirit Lake.
