Papago Indian Girl
Earns Fine Record
At The University

One of the outstanding co-eds graduating from the University of Arizona this year is Christine Garcia, Papago Indian girl. For the past three years Miss Garcia has been a first string pitcher on the Varsity Villagers' baseball team, a guard on their basketball team, a fullback on her class hockey team and a member of the girls' tennis squad.

That Miss Garcia has demonstrated remarkable physical ability and carried out the tradition of her race is seen by a review of her achievements while enrolled at the state institution.

At one time during her college career the Indian girl pitched in a baseball game between an all-star girls' team and one composed of male members of the faculty. She won the game almost single-handed by striking out 11 batters and getting a double and home run in three times at bat.

Miss Garcia is a home economics major and plans to do dietetics work among the Indians upon her graduation this June. She first attended the mission Presbyterian school south of Tucson, next was a student at the Indian girls' school and later attended Tucson high school.

Points are given to girl members of different teams and after receiving 800 points a girl is given a white sweater with a block "A" on it. Miss Garcia earned her sweater two years ago and at the present time has a total of 1425 points. She needs just 125 points more to earn a blanket similar to those given to varsity football players. In the opinion of the physical education department she is almost certain to get the points before her graduation. If she does, she will be the first girl at the university to receive a blanket athletic award.
