BOLIVIA AND PARAGUAY IN BORDER CRASH
Fort Is Charged, Captured and Burned—Relations Severed

LA PAZ, Bolivia, Dec. 10.—While Hoover’s party was anchored off Antofagasta, Chile, last Saturday night, the Bolivian government issued an official announcement of a frontier clash between Bolivian and Paraguayan soldiers resulting in partial severance of political relations of the two nations.

The announcement disclosed that the Paraguayan Government requests a committee of inquiry provided by the Fifth Pan-American Conference of 1923, appointed to investigate the situation.

The statement says a Paraguayan force of cavalry and infantry, totalling 300 men, attacked and captured Fort Vanguardia, north of Bahia Negra on the border, killing most of the garrison of 35 men and setting fire and razing the Fort.

The statement says the “Bolivian government considers the attack on Fort Vanguardia an insolent menace to the fraternity of people and constitutes an attack on the sovereignty, providing a motive for the virtual rupture of diplomatic relations with the aggressor country from whose territory the Bolivian Legation has already been withdrawn.”
