Good Roads Day
Good roads day in Missouri has proven such a tremendous success that already the governors of Arkansas and Kansas have taken steps to have a good roads day in those states, and the prospects appear to be excellent for the work becoming nation-wide rather than state-wide. The Sioux Falls Argus Leader has been advocating a good roads day for South Dakota for some time, and its editor even offered to do a full day's manual labor on the roads himself on that day, for the sake of the cause.
Certainly, with Missouri's example at hand, it appears that a good roads day would be a pretty good thing for any state. A hundred thousand men or so, imbued with a common enthusiasm, could do an immense amount of improvement upon the roads of any state in eight or ten hours, and the exercise they would get would be a good thing for them, too. South Dakota has been favored by nature in the matter of highways. It is comparatively an easy thing to have good roads in South Dakota but South Dakotans should not permit this fact to let them become lax in the performance of their own duty in the matter. They should join forces to assist nature, and furnish an example to older, and wealthier states of the best roads on the western hemisphere. Much is being accomplished in South Dakota right now in the line of road improvement, but a great deal more must be done before the roads are in the ideal condition South Dakotans could quite easily make them.
With three or four national highways crossing the state, including the Chicago-Twin Cities-Aberdeen-Yellowstone Park trail; the black and yellow trail from Chicago through Brookings and Pierre to the Black Hills and thence to Yellowstone park, and the Canada-to-the-Gulf highway, South Dakota has every incentive to make her highways the best in the Union. If a good roads day would help bring this about, why by all means let us have a good roads day.-Aberdeen News.
