Dunellen, Aug. 26. - Through the influence of Congressman Benjamin F. Howell and the efforts of Augustus F. Todd, of the Dunellen Board of Education, a cannon mounted on a carriage, together with a number of old shells, have been received at Dunellen and will be placed in front of the public school in this place. Mr. Todd has been interested in the matter for some time and it was only through Congressman Howell's aid that it was made possible to get the cannon and shells. It is said that this is the last field piece available for such purposes, it having been obtained from one of the arsenals.
It is planned to place the cannon and shells in position on Labor Day and representatives of the Board of Education will visit Winfield Scott Post, No. 73, G. A. R., tonight for the purpose of extending an invitation to the veterans to be present at the unveiling of the cannon on Labor Day and take part in appropriate ceremonies to be arranged. All of the school children of Dunellen will also attend and there will be addresses suitable to the occasion and a worthy display of patriotism on the part of the children, who will sing national airs and participate in other ways.
