Captured Flags. The Buffalo (N. Y.) Courier gives some information concerning the number of flags captured from and by the Union troops during the late war, which will be of interest to the soldiers who represented the several States. Where the information comes from is not known. The following figures show the number of flags taken from regiments belonging to each State by the Confederate troops: Alabama 16; Arkansas 4; Connecticut 1; Delaware 0; Florida 6; Georgia 23; Illinois 16; Indiana 2; Iowa 1; Kentucky 2; Louisiana 5; Maine 4; Maryland 9; Massachusetts 9; Michigan 8; Mississippi 10; Missouri 3; New Jersey 2; New Hampshire 1; New York 13; North Carolina 26; Ohio 7; Pennsylvania 12; South Carolina 7; Tennessee 10; Texas 4; Vermont 1; Virginia 52; Wisconsin 2; miscellaneous 8. Total 259. The next statement shows the number of Confederate flags captured by the Union troops of each State: Alabama 7; Arkansas 1; Connecticut 9; Delaware 3; Florida 1; Georgia 3; Illinois 13; Indiana 19; Iowa 13; Kentucky 11; Louisiana 2; Maine 8; Maryland 2; Massachusetts 10; Minnesota 5; Michigan 13; Mississippi 3; Missouri 4; New Jersey 5; New Hampshire 1; New York 105; North Carolina 5; Ohio 34; Pennsylvania 16; South Carolina 1; Texas 5; Tennessee 5; Vermont 4; Virginia 24; West Virginia 17; Wisconsin 4. Total 386. By these figures, it will be noticed that while the Union troops of the non-slave-holding States, almost without an exception, captured more flags than they lost, the Union troops of States that held slaves before the war, almost without an exception, lost more than they captured. The Courier adds: As far as this comparison goes, it tends to show that the troops from Southern States who fought for the Union were not so good as those raised in the North, and inferentially that the best blood of the South supported the rebellion. The capture of battle-flags is substantial testimony of victory; the loss of one indicates the utmost demoralization possible for a regiment, hence the conclusions from the tables above are irrefragable.
