Holds 42nd Reunion

Hampton, Va., June 5 - "Preparing today for tomorrow's challenges" was the theme of the 42nd reunion of the National Hampton Alumni Association at Hampton Institute held on the college campus during the commencement weekend, May 31 - June 2.

Approximately 200 alumni returned to the college campus to participate in the three-day program highlighted by a luncheon address by Frank L. Ashmore, Director of Development and Public Relations at Randolph Macon Woman's College, and the annual message of Hugh Victor Brown, president of the Alumni Association, and Dr. Alonzo G. Moron, president of the college.

Developing the reunion theme, Mr. Ashmore, in his talk entitled "Preparing for the Unpredictable," stressed the fact that "ignorance still is our most formidable foe." In view of the rapid scientific progress, it will be necessary that we educate a far greater proportion of our young people and to prepare them to live in a "world which is only in the process of being born," he said.

Pointing out that "unless the average man in this country is willing to pay a large part of the higher education bill, the job cannot be done," Mr. Ashmore urged the alumni to support their college. "For in the future," he said, "as in the past, the price of education is far, far less than the cost of ignorance."

One of the major items approved in the business meeting was the hiring of an alumni secretary, in keeping with the college board of trustees' recent decision to underwrite such a position. The job of this full-time person would be to develop better communications between the body of the alumni and their college. It is planned that he would make periodic visits to the Hampton Alumni Association chapters throughout the country.
