Serving huge steaks exquisitely cooked, the Laurel volunteer fire department entertained at a stag dinner Wednesday evening in honor of H. E. Herbert, recently retired member who had served 21 years.
Seventeen active and honorary members attended the party, staged in a city hall room that has been assigned to the use of the fire department.
Herbert occupied the place of honor at the table. Of those present only one or two were on the department when he joined in 1925.
At conclusion of the dinner, President Joe Larson in a short address expressed the department's appreciation for Herbert's long service, faithful attendance at meetings and responses to fire calls. As a mark of the members' esteem Larson presented him with an engraved gold ring and a certificate of honorary membership.
In reply Herbert told of his admiration for the many good fellows he had known in the department during the past 21 years, and mentioned some of the ups and downs the outfit had experienced at various times. He said he highly valued his associations with the members.
Later in the evening, Frank Hartley announced that the Laurel Saddle club wished to cooperate with the firemen in an appropriate celebration when the department receives its new pump equipped fire truck.
A committee of three prepared and served the dinner. They were Roscoe Webster, cook and chairman, Rinehold Frank and Clarence Alex.
