"The first message over the Atlantic cable from Trinity Bay was flashed through to London by the Hughes machines. The speed of the Hughes machine is about 300 per cent. greater than English machines, which do not record the message transmitted, the Hughes machine prints every word in plain, clear, capital letters. We are also gratified to learn from the same source that negotiations have been opened by the Atlantic Company, looking to purchase of patent of the Hughes invention, with the view to the immediate use of the machines upon the Atlantic cable—the agents of Professor Hughes being willing to guarantee that the machines will transmit intelligence 200 per cent. faster and with more accuracy than can be done by any other system. In fact Prof. Hughes confidently expects to be able to write through the cable at the rate of from five to ten words a minute. Professor Whitehouse, who is working the cable, claims to be able to work at the rate of about one word per minute: but the great difficulty of controlling his peculiar constructed magnets occasions the loss of a great portion of each day in "adjusting." The Hughes machines will probably be put upon the cable line early in September."
