"Mr. Welsh and I were taken Prisoners by the Wyandots the Tenth of May last, about two Miles on this Side of your old Grass Guard, and carried immediately to Genundot, where poor Welsh was killed as was likewise every one that was with me but Pompey. I have lived ever since, God knows a most miserable Life, every Moment in Danger of being knocked on the Head. Many Midnight Councils they held on me, but God Almighty always prevented them from hurting me. They have now put me into a Family, and I suppose made me as they think, one of themselves. I am in the place of the Merchant that died last Winter, going to war against the Cherokees, and now live with his Brother, who uses me very well; likewise does Mokickon John, and I believe there is no Danger now of their killing me; as I hope the War will not last long, flatter myself with the hopes of seeing you soon. Mr. Smallman, and the two Levy's were taken by the Wyandots, within four Miles of Detroit; one of the Levy's, was given to the Chippewas, and Smallman to the Shawanese, and I understand by the Indians here, that they are both killed. This Nation, they tell me, have a Mind to make Peace, but God knows whether it is so or not. I Suppose it is needless to tell you that all the Cargo is lost; many a Tear it cost me, to see them divide, wear and tear the Goods in the Manner they did; but as it was out of my Power to help it, thought as little of it as possible I could."
