National Honor Society Sponsors Annual Program

JACKSON, Miss. Recently Kappa Phi Chapter of Alpha Kappa Mu National Honor Society sponsored its Sixth Annual Honors Day program.

The program was held in Dansby Hall Auditorium at Jackson College. Dr. Thomas F. Freeman, Head of the Department of Philosophy at Texas Southern University featured speaker for the occasion, delivered a challenging address on the topic "The Passing of Mr. Scholar." The speaker deplored the apathy of students toward the pursuit of scholarly work in our colleges.

At the close of Dr. Freeman's address, Alpha Kappa Mu presented "Certificates of Merit" to all students whose names had appeared on the Dean's list for both the fall and winter quarters. Scholarship awards to students who had excelled in scholastic achievement were presented by President Jacob L. Reddix in behalf of certain organizations and the college. The participating organizations and the recipients of their awards were as follows: Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Elton Clyde Wolfe; Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Elma Bernice Burton; Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Earl Gooden; Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Mary Lou White; Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, William Vernon Pace; Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Robbie Barnes; Jackson College Club of Detroit, Elton Clyde Wolfe; Jackson College Club of Chicago, Elizabeth Broome; Dansby-Bond Award, David Mosley; Marion Perkins Sculpture Award, Shellye Parker; Science-Mathematics Area Award, Bernis A. Barnes; Harmonia Club Citation, Maudell Olivia Mapp.

Class scholarship awards went to the following: Freshman class, Shirley Floretta Stennis, Columbia; Yvonne Kennedy, Perkinston; Annie Mae Garner, Greenwood; Early Nichols, Marks; Gwendolyn Reddix, Ocean Springs.

Sophomore class, Ruth Lanelle Stennis, Columbia; Robbie Barnes, Collins; Earl Gooden, Clarksdale; Horace Tate, Handsboro; Alva Dean Varnado, Jackson.

Junior class, Raymond Benson Stewart Jr., Mt. Vernon, New York; Bettie Maxine Bell, Kosciusko; Sarah Katherine Dilworth, Kossuth; Annie Laura Lloyd, Jackson; Elaine Paige, Brookhaven.
