General Walker.—This notorious individual has published a letter, in which he bitterly complains of Capt. Davis's interference, and as a citizen of Nicaragua, demands redress from our government, for the wrong done in saving him from the vengeance of the exasperated Costa Ricans. There are many persons, who think this rather an ungrateful return for the Captain's services in extricating him from a tight place. Surrounded by a superior force, himself and his band of sick, discontented and nearly starved followers, had but a poor chance of escape. Under such circumstances prudence, if not gratitude, ought to have kept him silent.

We hear that an inquiry into Capt. Davis's conduct, has been ordered. Now in order to save time and trouble we respectfully suggest an easy way of settling the difficulty. It is not original; we are indebted for the precedent, to the history of the renowned Haroun Alraschid, Caliph of Bagdad. A true believer rescued a neighbour from drowning, but in effecting it, was so unlucky as to put out one of the fellow's eyes. The ungrateful man sued him for damages. After a patient hearing, the Cadi ordered the complainant to be thrown into the river, and if he succeeded in getting out without assistance, he would be entitled to damages, if not he was to be allowed to remain there. The complainant withdrew his suit.

Now the application is evident. If the General is really dissatisfied, let him be replaced in his former position. Sick men, mule flesh, &c., and if he succeeds in escaping, we go for reprimanding Capt. Davis. If not, the matter is settled, for we think General Mora will not be so green as to give him a chance to renew his complaint in Washington. That's our opinion, and as we are not a member of the bar we give it gratis.

General Walker complains about Capt. Davis's interference in rescuing him from Costa Ricans and demands redress. An inquiry into Davis's conduct is ordered. A humorous suggestion proposes replacing Walker in his perilous situation to test his complaint, drawing from an anecdote about Haroun Alraschid where an ungrateful man withdraws his suit after a similar test.
