G. E. GRAVES
By Arlington Sands
(This is the first of a series of articles by Sands in the coming city commission election.)
At Last!
A Negro has entered a city commission race here with the will to win - the ability to serve and the disposition to rally the whole-hearted support of the Negro populace. The candidate is Atty. G. E. Graves, Jr.
ATTORNEY GRAVES
Graves is a young man a militant lawyer who has contributed much to the making of justice and fair play a reality in this city.
Atty. Graves is the fourth from this section to seek a seat on the city commission. Unlike the others, Graves is better known and well liked. His chance for election exceeds the others. This year's election is a unique one . . .
Not one incumbent seeks re-election.
Not a sure winner among the 22 candidates.
Big money as well as the incumbents seemingly are absent.
No real issue to stir up the voters.
All this adds up to the quietest and "coolest" election in recent years of which means we will probably witness the smallest turn out of voters for a city commission election in recent years.
A small vote can help Graves' cause, providing votes are sufficient in the precincts he now expects to carry.
How well Graves does, however, depends largely on the type of campaign he conducts.
Is he to go to the voters as Graves the man - or is it to be Graves the champion of the Negro cause?
His greatest chance for success will be in his ability to electrify the Negro masses and at the same time, to exhibit himself capable of administering the city unbiasedly to the White voters, for without votes he certainly can not win.

Atty. G. E. Graves Jr., a young militant Negro lawyer known for advancing justice, enters the city commission race as the fourth from his section but better known and liked than predecessors. The unique election lacks incumbents, sure winners, big money, and issues, promising low turnout that could aid Graves if he carries expected precincts. Success depends on campaigning as both a capable administrator for all and champion of the Negro cause to mobilize voters.
