FACTS FOR THE LEGISLATURE.

We have received the following from a most intelligent friend in Charleston, Kanawha. It speaks more for the cause of the "great work" than one of our orators could say in a three days' speech. We most respectfully recommend it to the attention of our Legislators and the public :

The James and Kanawha Improvement.

To the Editors of the Compiler.

While the Northern canals have all been closed for months, and while the Ohio river has been frozen over, so as to admit wagons and horsemen to cross it at Wheeling, the Kanawha river has remained open all winter, and now, on the 5th of March, we have a free, open navigation from Charleston and Upper Kanawha to Cincinnati: and we have two steamboat arrivals today, which depart to-morrow for Cincinnati. The influence of the Kanawha river is so great over the Ohio, that although it may close, above its junction with that river, it very seldom or never is known to close below the mouth of Kanawha. Were the Virginia Improvement completed, for months in every year it would have the exclusive transportation of the trade from the Eastern markets to the "great West," while her less fortunate rivals to the North, are closed with ice, and that too, at that period of the year most desired by South-Western merchants for getting on their goods.

Should not then the whole energies of the State be directed to this great centre line, which once being finished, would infuse new life into all the other works of the State, and once more place the "Old Dominion" on that elevated stand which nature has destined her to occupy among the States of this Union?
