A late London letter published in the National Intelligencer, has the following items.
We have witnessed, during the past week the deposition of another monarch—no less a one than that of the railroad king, George Hudson, Esq. M. P.—Louis Philippe fled not Paris last year, more carefully than did Mr. Hudson from the half-yearly meeting of the Eastern Counties Railway on Wednesday last. A serious charge had previously been brought against Mr. Hudson, upon which it would be unfair in the present stage of the business to pass any decided opinion. It is neither more nor less than that he, whilst chairman of the York, Newcastle, and Berwick Railway Company, and, as such, bound to protect its interests, sold to that company 2500 shares of the Great North of England Line, at prices averaging £5 per share above what they might have been bought at in the market, thereby pocketing £125,000, at the cost of those whose interests he was bound, by every principle of honor and honesty, to protect. When this matter was discovered, Mr. Hudson offered to refund the overcharge: but he was met by the reply that it was not a question of money, but one of character. He was chairman of the Eastern Counties, the York, Newcastle, and Berwick, and the Midland Counties Railways, representing, together, a capital of from thirty to forty millions sterling; he has resigned the two first offices, and no doubt will also the last. A committee has been appointed to examine the whole affair, and the result will soon be known.
