St. Jago de Compostela, in Galicia, the most N. W. Province of Spain - and bounded by Portugal on the South. Sept. 1.

The count de Croix, captain gen. of this kingdom has ordered all the militia of this country, and particularly that of Orense and Tuy upon the Minho, which partly separates Galicia from the dominions of the king of Portugal, to be in readiness to join a body of 12,000 regular troops, which were to march that way under the command of the Marquis de Castellar, captain general.

Galicia is the best peopled of any province in Spain, the inhabitants are brave and good soldiers, and the militia form a body of 16,000 men.

These measures engage the attention of the public, so much the more, because the Trade to Portugal has been prohibited on Pain of Death, and exact enquiries are ordered to be made into the revenues of the Religious Communities, which it's thought will be added to those of the Crown, and will produce a clear profit to the latter of 100,000,000 piastres. It is pretended that the King will maintain the Religious at a certain allowance per day. It's added, that no more Monks are to be admitted without his majesty's express leave, and that their present number consists of above 80,000, most of them capable of bearing arms.

Orders have been sent to Corunna and Ferrol to keep ten men of war ready upon the first notice; and the Count de la Vega Florida, lieutenant general of the marine, is to command that squadron, and hoist his flag on board the Foudroyant. Sailors are raising with the utmost expedition to man this fleet.
