Their Work Yesterday Afternoon.
The Committee rooms looked deserted yesterday, many of the committees having completed their labors and reported finally. The Judiciary committee and committee on Legal Affairs were the only ones that held sessions yesterday afternoon for the transaction of business. The Judiciary committee will report a bill for the promotion of medical science. This is Dr. Green's bill of Portland. It allows the Maine Medical School to procure the bodies of certain deceased persons for anatomical purposes. The same committee will report bills concerning the ease of abused and neglected children; to authorize cities and towns of more than 1000 inhabitants to take land for public parks under certain conditions; to amend sections 66 and 67, chapter 6, Revised Statutes, relating to the assessment of taxes. It provides that tax payers cannot have an appeal unless they bring in their lists and make oath to the same. The petitions for a restoration of salary of the judges of the Superior Court of Cumberland and Kennebec counties were referred to the next legislature.
The Legal Affairs committee will report favorably on bills to provide a system of sewerage for the City of Auburn; to give churches enlarged powers over trustee property; prohibiting plantations of more than $40,000 valuation and 200 population from calling upon adjacent towns to relieve paupers. Leave to withdraw will be reported on petition to give widows fee simple in their husband's estate, instead of dower, as at present provided. The committee have considered all matters before them and are ready to make their final report.
