Are Put in Jail for Ill-Treating Guest.
New York, Aug. 14.-Under Sheriff Wanock, of Queens County, L. I., arrested Gustave Wolf and his wife, proprietors of Wolf's boarding-house in Great Neck. The officer hastened to the depot, taking the first train for Long Island City, and lodged his prisoners in the county jail. The villagers were in a quandary as to the charge upon which they had been arrested, but it soon leaked out that they were the defendants in a civil suit instituted by Emeline Von Darven, until a week ago one of their boarders. Miss Von Darven engaged board for the season last month, agreeing to pay weekly in advance. Some of the gentlemen boarders in the house were attentive to her, and it is said that the other lady boarders became jealous of her, and, led by Mrs. Wolf, informed the latter's husband that Miss Von Darven must leave the house. Mr. Wolf at first objected, as 'she was such a charming person, and paid her bills promptly,' but later he decided to eject her, but she declined to leave the premises, as she had paid for a week's board, and the week would not end for four days. Wolf then began to use abusive language to his boarder and attempted to put her down stairs. In both affairs he was assisted by his wife. Miss Von Darven came to this city and retained a lawyer to bring suit against the Wolfs for defamation of character and for assault. Four suits have been begun: One against Wolf for assault, for $2,000; one for defamation of character, for $10,000, and two against Mrs. Wolf. Mrs. Wolf was held in $2,000 bail and Mr. Wolf in $2,250. Up to a late hour they had not found bondsmen.
