BENWOOD.

The lower pharmacy is receiving an outer coat of paint. The addition to the factory is about ready for the machinery. Yesterday was the semi-monthly pay day at the Benwood Iron Works. A leap-year picnic is on the tapis for the near future. The Princess is missed from her usual trade. The luxuriant vegetation is being cut off the sides of the thoroughfares. The schools of this city and vicinity resume to-morrow. The pedagogues and "goguses" have returned from the institute. The bridge over Bogg's run will be the next improvement. This bridge cannot be erected too soon, as the present one is considered unsafe. Mr. Alex. Dorsey. of Sherrard, was about the only school officer of the county that attended the institute. Mr. J. Reilly. of Floral Home, one of the most prominent Democrats of the county, is making preparations to erect a Cleveland and Hendricks flag pole on his farm. The Bogg's Run school opens to-morrow under the judicious management of Miss Ada Dolbear, assisted by Miss Emma Pelley The Gravel street school will be ably conducted by Professor Frank Warden, assisted by Miss A McCale, Mrs. Johnson and daughter, Miss Lottie, of Wheeling, were the guests of Mrs. Hannah McMechen one day last week. Mrs. J. McMahon, accompanied by Miss Annie Johnson, departed Wednesday on a visit to friends in Grafton. and for a sojourn at Mountain Lake Park. Messrs J. Newton and Harry Riddle arrived Tuesday from their trans-Atlantic visit. Captain Benj Gorsuch, of the Fourth Division, accommodation. wishes that teachers' institutes would be held often, so that he may have the pleasure of assisting the pretty school ma'ms with their shawl straps, packages, etc Miss Mamie Bordeaux, of Wheeling. was the guest of Miss Anna Brown, the latter part of last week. Mrs. Newton, Sr., of Main st., is somewhat indisposed. Rev Lewis Wagner is visiting friends in the vicinity of Wheeling. Mr. Geo. Simmons was in town Friday perambulating around with his former companions. Mr. Hooton prosecuting attorney of this county, was in town yesterday. Mr. Hart, the astute editor of the Herald. of Marshall county, informs us that he has engaged a correspondent for his paper from this town It will be to the interest of the precinct if the otherwise intelligent resident will learn to extend the customary courtesies received by reporters elsewhere Prof. Haines, of the Lindsley Institute, was in town a few minutes yesterday. Prof. J. May has returned from his home in Fairmont. Miss Bell Munnell, of Waynesburg. and one of the most accomplished teachers of Marshall county. was the guest of friends here latter part of last week. Mrs. Jas. Bryant visited the Nail City yesterday. The Miss Guivers, of Wheeling. were the guests of Miss Lydia McMechen last Wednesday. Miss Sullivan, of Pittsburg, who has been the guest of Mrs. W. Burrell for some time past, left for her home yesterday to the regret of her many acquaintances. Little Miss Elvia, daughter of Mr. Fitzgerald, on Main street, entertained her friends in a graceful and hospitable manner Monday evening last. The little folks had a pleasant time. which was in no way diminished by the serving of choice refreshments. The Democrats have put out a streamer from their headquarters in Centre ward. The select family picnic on Wednesday was the social event of the week, and one of the most enjoyable ever given here. It could not have been otherwise, as it was under the management of two of our most popular society matrons.
