Editors Herald:--As you seem to have no correspondent from this thriving little community, I thought if permissible I would send to your paper a few dots "here and there."
Health is o. k. as far as I know. W. F. Reader (Will) is home from Houston, spending Christmas with his family and friends. Mr. Epps, brother-in-law to L. J. Huffman, and Mr. Huffman of Coryell county, are spending the holidays here with relatives and friends. They are hale and hearty and full of good cheer. Glad to welcome them into our little community.
School is progressing finely under the management of W. E. Thompson. We have a good Sunday school and regular preaching every second Sunday and Sunday night.
The Farmers' Educational and Co-Operative Union is reasonably prosperous, which leads me to say to the farmers of our county and to the union especially these two or three things:
First. The great slump the gamblers have given us in prices evidences the importance of close and cohesive union of the farmers. Since all the branches of trade and industry act collectively it is impossible for the farmer to survive and hold his own without acting together.
Second. This crisis now upon us is putting our wisdom, courage and fidelity to the test. If we stand the strain like men, whatever the sacrifice, we will come out the victors and permanently establish ourselves in this great enterprise. If we falter and act the part of weaklings we will show our lack of stamina and the littleness of our wisdom. Courage, patience and fidelity are what we need at this hour. Courage to take hold of the stupendous undertakings, patience in the great work of education, and fidelity to hold to every lesson learned.
This leads me to say that the coming session of the county union is to be held with Cayuga union, beginning on Friday at 10 a. m. before the second Sunday in January. It is of special importance every way. It is the time for the election of officers for the ensuing year, and the prosperity of the union depends largely as to how it is manned. It is, of course, the time when the year's undertakings should be laid out and the methods of their accomplishment outlined. Hence the importance of a full attendance from every local union in the county at that meeting.
Christmas is near but we scarcely realize it, expect we know it to be the 25th of December. The present fall down in cotton prices has forced Santa Claus into the practice of economy on the strictest terms, hence the children have to forego much of the pleasures of his annual visit.
