VISIONS IN A REALM OF FANCY.
I had long been anxious to see the much talked of painting of Death on the Pale Horse. I endeavored, much as possible, to suppress my opinion until I had a fair view of it. After entering the Hall the Agent very kindly presented me with descriptive pamphlet, and I seated myself and commenced a profound study of the work, assisted by this pamphlet. As I read, scene after scene presented itself unto my vision, until at last the opening of the fourth seal namely: Death: on the Pale Horse, burst forth in all the awful grandeur of reality. As I contemplated the transcendent beauties connected with this portion of the Holy Word, together with the unequalled skill of the artist and the powerful representation that he had given of it upon the canvass, I became involved in an extacy inexpressible. I felt as though the period had arrived in which the pivots upon which worlds revolve should be broken asunder and they rush into mad confusion, methought I heard the archangel, Gabriel, sound his trump; and saw the grand conflagration of matter, while I, poor mortal, soared triumphantly above the scene and sanctioned the will of Him who swore that "time should be no longer."
