Full Text
Real estate in Wilmington is assessed in nine cases out of ten higher than it is in Philadelphia, where the tax rate is $3.50 on the thousand less. Here in Wilmington the tax rate is $2.10 per hundred, while in Philadelphia it is but $1.85 on the hundred and next year it will be $2.20 per hundred. As we have repeatedly said, the burden on real estate is entirely too high and some effort should be made by real estate owners to remedy this evil. This can be done at the ballot box with telling effect and the lesson taught that the city government shall be honestly and economically run. All useless offices should be dispensed with, thus effecting a saving of several thousand dollars a year. Then corporations should be made to pay their honest and just share of taxation. No privileges should be granted to any corporation or individual without the city benefiting by the franchise given. The people want a lower tax rate than they have had for years in this city.
