FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 28, 1873.
From the Phoenix (Oswego county, N. Y.) Register.
Hunting up His Old Wife.
Last Monday evening there arrived in
town a Mr. Knights, direct from California,
in search of his wife whom he had
parted with some twenty-four years ago,
since which time he had received no tid-
ings from her.
Mr. Knights, who is now about sixty
four years old, was born in Jefferson
county, and came to this vicinity about
1837. He was married in 1838 in a log
house on the farm of Joseph Vickery to a
woman whose maiden name was Sally
Lemonier, but who had married Ezra
Miles eleven years previous, in Clay, Onondaga county. Miles, whom we believe is
still living near Baldwinsville, soon after
enlisted in the United States service, was
absent sixteen years, during which time
she became acquainted with and married
Knights. At the breaking out of the Cal-
ifornia fever, Knights and his wife were
living in Illinois, though it appears that
for several years prior to this date, Mrs.
Knights had been living with Mr. Ran-
som Johnson. Knights, among the first,
sought the land of golden promises, leaving his wife to return to her friends in
this vicinity, and the twain had no tidings
from each other until they met by acci-
dent, Monday evening, in Chapman's
store. Mrs. Knights, who has been for
the last half-dozen years the wife of Curtis Munger, came into the store and was
recognized by her former husband. At
first she did not know him, but when his
identity was made known to her, she was
nearly overcome with emotion.
Mr. Knights claims to have written to
her repeatedly, and sent her various sums
of money, none of which she ever received. Knights has undergone many hardships in his wanderings, and has been
prospered in this world's goods. Among
adventures, he, with five comrades, were
attacked by the Indians, and all heaped
up and left for dead, but he revived, and
succeeded in escaping. Numerous scars
on his body attest his hard usage.
We believe Mrs. Munger has decided to
abandon her present husband and return
to her early love.
