On Tuberculosis
Dr. Henry Boswell, superintendent of the State Sanatorium at Magee and recognized as one of the outstanding authorities on tuberculosis in the nation, was the principal speaker at the Lexington Rotary club Tuesday.
Dr. Gordon Russell was program chairman and presented the speaker.
Dr. Boswell, a native of Alabama, is a Mississippian by adoption and he completed in June forty years of service to the people of the State of Mississippi.
"Mississippi was losing 3,000 people per year on tuberculosis alone 32 years ago in this state," Dr. Boswell said. Today the record has changed drastically. During the whole year of 1948 there was recorded only 668 deaths from T. B. Of this number there were 206 white and 462 colored.
The noted speaker said that the death rate from T. B. among the Negroes has dropped much faster than among the whites among which heart disease now claims a higher rate than tuberculosis.
There is now being built at Magee the finest hospitals to be found anywhere in the country for negroes and it will be in use within a few months, Dr. Boswell said.
Heart Disease
Heart disease is preventable, the speaker continued, most of it being brought on by individuals affected. The reasons for this, he said, are we don't take care of ourselves and most of us worry ourselves to death. The main secret here, he said, is to visualize how well the world would get along without us.
The rules of health which will help keep a person fit, Dr. Boswell said, are: eating regularly a balanced diet, sleeping, working, playing regularly and having regular habits. Above all, he said, don't take life too seriously.
Dr. Boswell's splendid address was greatly enjoyed by a good attendance.
