IN SENATE.
Thursday, March 1.
United States and Georgia.—Mr. Benton, from the select Committee on the late Message of the President, made a long report on the subject, concluding with the following Resolution:
Resolved, That the President of the United States be respectfully requested to continue his exertions to obtain from the Creek Indians a relinquishment of any claim to lands within the limits of Georgia.
An unsuccessful attempt was made to elect a Printer to the Senate. On the first ballot the votes were, for Duff Green, (Editor of Telegraph,) 22; Gales & Seaton, (Editors of National Intelligencer,) 21; Scattering, 4. Second ballot. For Duff Green, 23; Gales & Seaton, 22: Scattering, 2.
Cumberland Road.—The bill appropriating $30,000 for the preservation and repair of this Road, PASSED. Yeas, 21; Nays, 15.
Friday, March 2.
The Vice-President, having retired from his seat, NATHANIEL MACON was elected President pro tem.
A Message was received from the President, transmitting copies of communications from the Governor of Georgia, which were noticed in the last Spy.
Colonial Trade Bill.—The bill on this subject having been returned from the other House, with amendments, the same were considered, and, after debate, were rejected. Yeas, 19; Nays, 25. The bill having been returned to the House, a Message was received with information that they insisted on their amendment to the above bill. On motion of Mr. Randolph, it was voted, by the Senate, to insist on their disagreement to the amendments of the House, and afterwards a Committee of Conference was appointed. The Committee afterwards reported that the Conferees could not agree.
Saturday, March 3.
The Colonial Trade Bill having been returned by the House, with their vote, that they adhered to their amendment, a motion that the Senate do concur in the amendment of the House was rejected. Yeas, 20; Nays 25. So the bill was rejected.
HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES.
Thursday, March 1.
The Military and Navy appropriation bills were passed.
Friday, March 2.
The House disagreed to the amendments of the Senate to the Colonial Trade Bill, and appointed a Committee of Conference.
The House took up the bill to aid the State of Illinois in making a Canal, &c. The bill, after much opposition, passed.—Yeas, 90; Nays, 97.
The bill, to increase the salary of the Post-Master-General to $6000 per annum, passed. Ayes, 103.
Saturday, March 3.
United States and Georgia.—Mr. EVERETT, from the select Committee on the messages of the President on Georgia affairs, made a long and detailed report on the subject, recommending the following resolutions:-
1. Resolved, That it is expedient to procure a cession of the Indian lands in the limits of Georgia.
2. Resolved, That, until a cession is procured, the laws of the land, as set forth in the Treaty of Washington, ought to be maintained by all necessary constitutional and legal means.
The report was laid on the table, and 6000 copies were ordered to be printed.
