Threatens Special Sessions If "Special Interests" Allowed To Prevent Tax Relief
Tallahassee, May 19.—Governor Doyle E. Carlton today laid down to a joint session of the Florida legislature his recommendations to relieve Florida's financial and tax situation. He threatened special legislative sessions through the summer for non-accomplishment.
He recommended:
Adoption of increased vehicle license fee laws.
A two percent tax on gross receipts of power companies.
An increased per gallon gasoline tax.
A five cent tax on kerosene.
Creation of a state tax commission.
A tax on corporations.
A graduated occupational license tax.
He suggested a tax on amusements.
The chief executive flayed the intrusion of private interests into legislative halls to lobby against the enactment of proper revenue measures.
"The responsibility is yours," he said in conclusion of a 35 minute address, the second he has given to the legislature since it convened April 7.
Take Summer If Need Be
"You have less than two weeks in which to accomplish this or some other program. You can do it, or spend the entire summer at it. I think the task is worth a summer's work, if need be.
"But the job will never be done while you permit private interests to sway your judgment."
