HUNTING TIME AND ACCIDENTS
Hunters Are Cautioned To Exercise Care in Handling Firearms
KEEP SAFETY RULES
John D. Reeder, president of the Delaware Safety Council cautions hunters to exercise all due care in handling firearms. Last year firearms accident fatalities totaled about 2,200, simply because someone persisted in breaking a few common safety rules that govern the sport. This needless waste of human life can be averted if only hunters will observe the six cardinal rules as outlined by Mr. Reeder:
1. Never carry an assembled gun in your car.
2. Always keep the safety catch on when carrying it in the field,
3. Know what you are shooting at—and don't pull the safety catch until you are ready to take aim.
4. Never assume that a gun is not loaded.
5. If you must cross a fence, break the breech and hand the gun over to a companion, or slide it under the fence before climbing.
6. When you finish, be sure the gun is unloaded. Dismantle it, if possible, or lock it away from the children.
Mr. Reeder also urges hunters everywhere to comply with these important measures, enacted for your security. Hunting is a great sport, but many a trip has ended in tragedy because the participants failed to observe the fundamental rules of safety. Don't let it happen to you!
