MARINES GUARD SHIPS TIED UP IN BIG STRIKE

By United Press Leased Wire

SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 18,

United States marines stood guard today in the Union Iron Works plant, where construction of government ships valued at millions of dollars had been completely stopped by the strike of shipbuilders.

Two companies of marines were hurried here from Mare Island during the night at the request of Capt. Harry G. Leopold, U. S. N., in charge of naval construction at the plant.

Early today, Capt. Leopold ordered the closing of all saloons within half a mile of the big plant, fearing that loitering men, inflamed by liquor, might create trouble there.

It was reported that additional companies of marines might be stationed at the Oakland and Alameda yards of the shipbuilding companies and saloons might be closed there also.

Simultaneously with this report came evidences from many quarters that the government is taking further steps to bring a settlement of the dispute which has precipitated the greatest strike in the history of the Coast and completely tied up all shipbuilding.

The first move in this direction was the sending of instructions to the federal adjustment board, now engaged in mediating the Seattle and Portland strikes, to expedite their work as much as possible in order that the adjustment reached at these points may serve as a basis of settlement of the Bay district controversy.

So far as rioting is concerned, the situation was quiet today. Officials of the Iron Trades Council, who are directing the ship strike, asserted today that the violence which marked the opening of the strike yesterday was the work of irresponsible individuals.

PORTLAND, Sept. 18.-Further strikes are threatened here today.

Loggers and timber workers in mills and camps along the Columbia river today are debating a general walkout in sympathy with the striking wooden shipbuilders. Local union timber workers on the Columbia river are declared active in working for a general strike.

On the other hand, shipbuilding companies today predicted that their yards would be running again with their old crews within two or three days.
