MONTEREY, Calif., (P) This could have been a modern version of Jonah and the whale - with a sadder ending. But skin-diver John E. Fletcher is happy to report it isn't.

The 41-year-old San Leandro, Calif., diver stared into the cavernous jaws of a 30-foot killer whale or white shark yesterday after it had sent him spinning.

Scared, but unhurt, he scrambled into a boat to join three companions. They had heard the warning shouts from a crowd on the beach and had climbed into their boat seconds before.
