Major J. M. Laidley, of Charleston
is formally announced as a candidate for
Congress in the Third District, subject to
the decision of the Democratic District
Convention. He publishes a lengthy card
in which he promises support to whatever
Democratic candidate may be selected
and says that if nominated "he will la-
bor faithfully for the conservation of
whatever of constitutional liberty and
State sovereignty is left to us, little
though it be." He is particularly anxious for a reform in the monetary system
of the general government
