A letter from Richmond, Virginia, dated Jan. 7, says, "This present moment only afforded time to acquaint you of a most dreadful fire that broke out this morning in a house opposite to Pennock and Nicholson's, and it caught that square, and from that, including Mr. Warrington's to a corner house of Mr. Greaves, is all consumed to ashes."
Another letter from the same place, says, "I am very sorry to inform you of one of the most unfortunate accidents, that could befall this city in its infant state. On the 7th inst. a fire broke out in Mr. Ross's large store at the foot of Shockoe-Hill; it is burnt to the ground, together with Pennock, Skipwith and Co's. Grove's, Nelson, Heron and Co's. stores, and nearly all the houses on that side of the way, Burd's ware-house with all the tobacco in each."
A particular account of this terrible conflagration has not yet been received, nor the damages ascertained; but it is said, near 100 houses have been destroyed, among which were 20 public and private ware-houses full of dry goods and tobacco.
