There was no Wood Nor Coal and People Burned Their Furniture to Keep from Freezing
Seattle, Wash., Jan. 16.-This city suffered severely yesterday from the effects of a cold wave.
Coal and wood were almost unobtainable and this caused great suffering among the people, who were left without fires. In hundreds of homes the people suffered so severely that they were compelled to chop up their furniture to make fires and save themselves from freezing.
The railroads have been unable to deliver coal and wood to the dealers in anything like sufficient quantities to supply the people in ordinary demands and when the cold king came yesterday it caught the entire city destitute almost of anything to make warmth.
As can well be imagined the suffering was great, especially among the poorer classes, who are always in a worse position to stand the cold than the wealthier class, not having even clothing enough to keep them partly warm.
