Full Text

Chesnuts.

The "Free trade" racket is played out. But the republican orators can't get over it. Even Jim Blaine who has been advocating the rankest free trade, calling it reciprocity begins his tirades by calling democrats free traders.

The democratic party is the friend of the honest tariff; the republican party is its worst enemy. The democratic party believes that the primary object of a tariff is to raise a revenue sufficient to carry on the government, with incidental protection to industries. The republican party proclaims that the object of a tariff is protection regardless of revenue. This is arrant nonsense. No tariff bill would ever have been passed upon this issue, but its object was declared to be to raise a revenue to pay the enormous expenses of the government. The republican party has determined to destroy, not only the surplus but the revenue itself, by making the tariff so high that no foreign goods can be imported and no revenue can be raised. In short it is doing all it can to make the tariff odious.- Wetzel Democrat.
