Full Text

May 9. Private letters from Madrid mention, that a scheme has actually been formed at court, to send over some of the most experienced crown engineers, in order to survey the American isthmus, commonly called the isthmus of Panama; after which such dispositions will be taken, as to render a passage by land from the North to the South Seas, impracticable to any future attempts of an enemy. This famous passage, by the account of the best writers, is little more than seventy miles over from the bottom of the gulph of Darien to the Spanish settlements in the South Seas, and has more than once been successfully attempted by the Buccaneers in America.
