Ann Chambers, Nome contestant for the title of Miss Alaska, is one of six contestants. Competing with her are Miss Anchorage, Mary Dee Fox; Miss Matanuska, Erika Kalwise; Miss Fairbanks, Faith Williams; Miss Point Barrow, Molly Ahvakana; and Miss Juneau, Kathy Shamanski.

Included in the gifts for the winner are a $1,000 scholarship donated by Pepsi-Cola; $500 for a wardrobe by Philco Radio; a portable TV by Conright Furniture; a trophy and crown by Matanuska Valley Bank; and expenses paid to Atlantic City by Greater Anchorage, Inc.

As a consolation, the contestants choose from among the losers, Miss Congeniality, who receives a trophy from the Matanuska Bank.
