Fire broke out in Rusche's woods just west of town about ten o'clock last Friday forenoon and for most of the afternoon the village was in great danger.
A high wind was blowing and the fire spread toward town very rapidly.
The Jones Lumber company and Rusch Bros. closed down their mills and sent their crews, aided by most of the citizens of Wabeno, to fight the fire. On account of the smoke and wind it was almost impossible for the men to get near the fire and they had to devote their work in checking the flames from reaching town. Several times the fire spread to the yard of the Wabeno Lumber company but was put out before any damage was done.
Rusch Bros. estimate that about $500.00 worth of their logs and cord wood was burned and Dr. Hubbard and H. P. Chase lost fourteen cords of wood.
About twenty acres was burned over.
