MINNEAPOLIS, Minn., July 8--(UP)--A field that includes National Champion Marvin "Bud" Ward, Spokane, Wash., Australian Champion Jim Ferrier, veteran Chick Evans, Chicago, and 150 other top-flight amateurs will open play tomorrow in the 41st annual Western Amateur golf tournament.
Over the long, heavily-trapped Minneapolis golf club course most of the nation's leading amateurs will compete in 36 qualifying holes tomorrow and Wednesday for the 63 places in the match play that opens Thursday. The 64th qualifying position will go automatically to Harry Todd, Lakewood, Texas, the defending champion.
As king of the nation's amateurs last year, Ward was the pre-tournament favorite, but he must contend with such stars as Wilfred Wehrle, 1937 western champion and low amateur in this year's national open; Art Doering, the present trans-Mississippi champion who eliminated Ward from the 1938 national amateur tournament; and Johnny Reaman, another former western amateur winner.
Among other entrants are Ted Adams, Canadian national champion in 1938; Ellsworth Vines, professional tennis champion who still is seeking his first major golf title; and Larry Moller, Quincy, Ill., runner-up in the Trans-Mississippi tournament.
