They are to be taught that the country has not yet reached the pitch where the election of either Hayes or Tilden is essential to its salvation. If it had it would not be worth saving.
Whatever wrong may have been espoused, whatever crimes against patriotism may have been committed, whatever discredit may have been brought on the judiciary, there is nothing in the facts which could justify resistance, the tribunal having been so plainly established for better or worse, by the concurrent action of both branches of Congress. The country must be tranquilized, apprehension must be allayed, business must be made safe and prosperous; after that, will come a reckoning, and we trust that all the parties concerned will be spared to illustrate the consequences of such things as they have done.
