Value of Woman Suffrage.

alike; they are of different force, but not unequal. The great principle is that God made them to act and rely on each other. Each is fitted higher by the inspiration of the other. Take Europe and Asia, or Northern and Southern Europe. The Northern half of Europe is higher than the Southern half, not in race nor in blood. There is some difference, as between Mohamedanism and Christianity. The former is male civilization and a male religion. Sophocles and Euripides were as pure as Tennyson, and purer than Dickens; but you may not open Sophocles and Euripides, and Chaucer, and much of Shakspeare, on your table. The civilization of Athens was male. Why? Because they wrote for men. The marbles which are carved to-day can be placed in any church or parlor. In Greece no man except one before his age, like Pericles made a woman his companion, and put thought and aspiration together with a woman. Only the last two hundred years have erected a platform which is ahead of the church in morals and ahead of law in ethics—and that its society where men and women are equal. Wherever the sexes together touch science, art, literature, the race lifts, and goes forward more successfully. So I beseech you, force the vote of woman. In the rottenness of cities and feudalism of the nations we must employ every force to secure the success of the Democratic institutions. Let the State rest on man and woman with the certainty that we shall outride the storm.
