The ingenuity with which certain contractors endeavor to increase their profits by deceptions in the various articles supplied to Government is remarkable. An instance has lately come to light in which an attempted fraud of this sort was detected at the laboratory of the Surgeon General's office. A coffee contractor of high respectability was detected in supplying to the Commissary Department an article of roasted and ground coffee which was, in fact, largely composed of Indian corn. The article was ingeniously prepared, and would easily deceive even a careful scrutiny.
