The Massacre of the French Ministers,

In any point of view, is a violent outrage upon the laws of nations, and humanity. The French are labouring hard, and it is presumed in vain, to throw the odium of the crime on the Cabinet of Germany; Laying aside every principle of honor and justice, it is scarcely conceivable, that the Emperor, or the Arch Duke Charles, would descend to be accessories to this deed, in the perpetration of which, there was nothing to be gained, but much to be lost from the general odium and resentment it must excite should the least suspicion rest upon them. The crime was probably committed by high way robbers, for the sake of booty, or by some injured husband or brother, to obtain a just revenge, and inflict that punishment from which the victims were screened by the sanction of their diplomatic characters.
