THE ENEMY.
The menacing aspect which the enemy has assumed in the adjacent waters, has again called our citizens into the field. As soon as the intelligence which we announced yesterday from Point-Look-Out reached this city, Gen. Winder issued the necessary orders for embodying the several volunteer corps of this city, and for parading and holding the remaining companies in readiness. We do not pretend to be acquainted with the measures which have been for some time maturing for the defence of this district, and which, were we able, it would be improper to make public: yet we have full confidence in the zeal and ability of the officer to whom, for six weeks past, the protection of the district has been entrusted: and doubt not that provision has been made to meet the present crisis.
At a time when all citizens must join in the common defence, our business of course will suffer embarrassment from the absence of our workmen. Any deficiency therefore which may occur during the unavoidable derangement of our office will no doubt be overlooked.—N. Int.
The latest authentic news from the enemy's fleet states that a very strong force had entered the Patuxent on Thursday, and indicated an intention to ascend that river.
We shall lose no time in publishing such intelligence of the enemy's movements as may safely be relied on. In the present state of things, however, the various rumors that will be daily circulated should be received with caution.

BALTIMORE. Aug. 20.
Information has been received this morning that a part of the enemy's force is proceeding up the Potomac and the residue up the Patuxent; and it is presumed their object is to land and march from the respective rivers to the City of Washington. The preparations here for resistance and defence will not be relaxed in consequence of this movement, and our citizens of all classes evince the greatest alacrity in obeying the orders of their respective officers.
