Full Text

In consequence of an inordinate thirst for sudden acquisition (says a letter from New-York) this city is at present far from being in an enviable situation. Confidence between man and man seems almost ruined; and it would be some consolation if contemptible misers and rich skin-flints had alone suffered in the late failures—Unfortunately the widow, the orphan, and some other characters, who deserve our pity, have been also taken in, and even upon the best aspect of the matter, must suffer the loss of the greater part of their little all. From the spirit of speculation which has stalked at large amongst us, commerce has for some time been diverted from its regular course into an improper channel; and the money, destined for commercial purposes, having been employed in speculating manoeuvres, the mercantile interests have suffered accordingly.
