Hospital Plans Auditorium For 2,000

Work to Begin Soon on Building for Chapel and Entertainment: Construction Starts on Operating Room.

Plans for a new State Hospital auditorium and recreation hall to seat 2,000 persons were announced this week by Dr. J. H. Therrell, superintendent of the Chattahoochee institution.

Construction was begun last week on the hospital's new operating room, which was approved last August at a meeting of the State Cabinet in Tallahassee.

Sketches for the auditorium are tentative, but Dr. Therrell said it would entirely replace the one now in use. It will serve as a theatre, chapel for religious services, and ball room. Construction will begin near the site of the old laundry as soon as the architect's plans are completed. Dr. Therrell said. Part of the seats will be collapsible, so the building can be used for dancing.

The operating room is being built as an attached annex on the north side of the general infirmary. A tunnel, joining the infirmary to the diet kitchen, was removed for the construction. The foundation was laid last week, and the superintendent said work on the building was being rushed to provide badly needed surgical facilities.

The surgery room was approved by the cabinet at a meeting when Dr. Therrell asked permission to accept bids for material from contractors, who had agreed to wait indefinitely for their money. Dr. Therrell pointed out to the cabinet that the present surgery quarters were unsterile and actually an unsafe place in which to perform an operation.
