HOLLYWOOD, Aug. 18. (U.P.)--The old Essanay-Chaplin studio, famous in the early history of the motion picture colony, was destroyed by fire of unknown origin today.
The flames apparently started in a part of the studio used for storage and swept swiftly through the tinder-dry sets once employed in the production of Charlie Chaplin and "Broncho Billy" Anderson pictures.
The blaze had gained such headway by the time firemen arrived that they devoted their efforts only to preventing the spread of the fire.
Most of the damage done was to stage equipment and scenery of the Fanchon and Marco company. Loss was estimated at about $50,000.
