PORTSMOUTH, Sept. 19.

Extract of a letter from a gentleman at Philadelphia, dated Sept. 6, to his friend in this town.

Dear Sir,

"I am sorry to inform you that the Epidemic continues to desolate our distressed city. A number of melancholy deaths have lately occurred with attendant circumstances, calculated to chill the feelings of humanity. God knows where the calamity is to end.--Several instances of house-breaking have also appeared.--All the public offices have removed, even the Post-Office, which is a peculiar inconvenience to us at present.--I expect to leave the city in the course of this week if my health is 'till then preserved from the clutches of this relentless destroyer."
