Extract of a letter from Portsmouth, Jan. 31.

"On Thursday evening Commodore Cornwallis came down from London to assume the command of the squadron intended for the East-Indies, and yesterday morning he went on board the Crown, in Portsmouth harbour; which ship, owing to the assiduity of Captain Cornwallis, nephew to the Commodore, and the extraordinary attention of Lieut. Schomberg, is now ready for sailing. In the course of this day, if the wind proves favourable, she will proceed to St. Helen's, in which case, the Commodore is expected to hoist his broad pendant."
