Full Text

In the publick Advertiser of yesterday, there appeared the following article of intelligence from Rome: "Within these few days several strangers have arrived here, said to be (not come) from North America. It is certain that they have been twice at the palace of the Pretender, of whom they have had a private audience, and it is whispered that they have brought him some very advantageous proposals; however, it is very much doubted whether he will accept them." Thus far this ingenious piece of information, which the conductor of the paper professes to give to the publick exactly in the same terms in which it was communicated. The necessity of passing a single observation on the falsity of this story is entirely superseded; its absurdity is too glaring not to stare common sense in the face, and set vulgar credulity at defiance. When the Americans make overtures to the Pretender, then may we expect to see Bute at the head of a whiggish Administration, and Mansfield professing a veneration for Magna Charta.
