THE PROSPECT IN NEW-HAMPSHIRE.
Connecticut RIVER, Feb. 8, 1839.
As to New Hampshire and her political character your may expect to hear even a better account than last year. Cheshire and Sullivan counties will give Gen. Wilson over 2000 majority—last year 1500. The Locofocos cannot again muster so strong as they did last year, unless they persuade some Tory in Congress to consent to be shot in a duel just before March, or unless the double voting game, so extensively played in your Middlesex district, is about to be introduced on a more extensive scale than we are aware of.
I believe our friends are on the alert every where in the State, even in the dark region of Coos, where the sun never rises till about noon. You will see by our New Hampshire Whig papers, that there is not so much fire and storm as last year. We are, however, pretty confident of blowing the Regency citadel to the four winds of heaven on the ides of March. I think we can safely calculate on seven Senators (a majority) and a majority of the House, and we stand a fair chance (double voting aside) of sweeping the board. For myself, I feel much more confidence as to the result, than I did last year, and I find that this is the general feeling of our friends, particularly those of them who then were rather lukewarm and incredulous as to the potency of New Hampshire Whigism. The "previous question" has already been moved on Cushman, and he is not a candidate for re-election to Congress. As to Atherton and his associates on the ticket, we mean to spring a "gag" upon them, if the thing be possible.
