TEMPERANCE AND WHIGGERY.
The Columbian Register, published at New Haven, Conn. reports the following paragraph from a speech made by Rev. Mr. Bacon at a temperance meeting in that city.
Look at it.
"Within three or four months, drinking has become the badge of a political party. The hard money humbug was hard enough, but the hard cider humbug will prove more disastrous to the country, and more degrading to those concerned in it. Yes, indeed, gentlemen who have enjoyed the benefits of Christian teachings, and who live in a land of gospel light—are called upon to exhibit their enthusiasm in a political strife, by drinking hard cider, made harder by hard brandy, for the glory of Gen. Harrison. Yes, at these conventions and committee rooms, many young and innocent will take his first lessons in drunkenness, which will bring him to the alms house, or the prison, and the drunkard's grave."
